I found this short novel gentle and atmospheric. Carr captures the slow rhythms of rural life and the sense of time suspended after trauma. The restoration of the mural mirrors the protagonist’s own recovery, and his interactions with the vicar’s wife add just enough tension to the stillness.

Some readers may find this understated story undeniably beautiful but also missing the emotional swell that might have made it truly unforgettable. Still, there’s much to admire here: the prose is spare but luminous, and every scene hums with warmth and melancholy.
