In Audition, Kitamura takes a bold risk by exploring a series of "what ifs" and deliberately subverting traditional narrative structure. For some readers, this cerebral approach might resonate, but for me, it felt more like an intellectual exercise than an engaging story. The narrator’s clinical, detached tone only added to the sense of sterility, creating a novel that often seems more interested in being clever than emotionally compelling.
