Zweig writes with precision and restraint; every page feels purposeful. Even as someone who already loves chess, I appreciated how the book captures both the thrill of the game and the claustrophobia of over-thinking it.

The ending is abrupt and left me wanting a bit more, but it feels in keeping with the book’s focus on psychological tension over tidy resolution.
