I understand why it’s a cult classic. I’m still not sure I understand why people love it.
It’s surreal, apocalyptic, dreamlike, and genuinely unlike anything else I’ve read. But I spent most of the book wondering: what is happening, who are these people, and why should I care?
By the end, I understood what Kavan was doing. The dream logic, the obsession, the symbolism, the nightmare atmosphere. I just found the actual reading experience… kind of average.
Interesting? Absolutely. A favorite? Not even remotely.
