For a while, Lost Lambs is the kind of weird, sharply observed family novel I love. Cash is at her funniest exploring the messy lives of the Flynn family, especially when she zooms in on the small, absurd ways people justify themselves.

Then the novel reaches for something bigger. A billionaire shipping-container conspiracy takes over, the perspectives multiply, and the cleverness starts to feel like noise.

Still, I loved lines like "If life is nothing, and death is nothing, why make a lateral move?"

Very funny and very strange, with the potential to be much more. Cash was really onto something with the Flynns, but the conspiracy plot pulls the novel away from what made it compelling.
