Novelist as a Vocation sits beautifully alongside the other “on writing” books I’ve loved by authors like Stephen King and Anne Lamott, yet it feels refreshingly distinct.

Murakami offers perspectives I’d argue only a Japanese writer, or one writing outside the U.S., could provide, from his unique approach to the craft to his insights on life. His methods and ways of thinking often diverge from what I’ve read elsewhere, making the advice feel both practical and original.

The one thing I wished for was a deeper dive into his personal life or childhood, which might have elevated the book even more. Still, Murakami comes across as humble, thoughtful, and genuinely helpful.

I'd say this is a must-read for any aspiring writer.
