Instead of relying on shock factor horror tactics, Old Soul channels creepy, mysterious vibes, giving away just enough to keep you reading on the edge of your seat.

While the novel's narrative jumps can be a bit jarring, a persistent background darkness maintains the sense of dread and unease throughout. Still, a reader my a find their investment and interest in the story may vary as the focus shifts between an extensive, revolving cast of supporting characters.

Barker's work here surpasses the average run-of-the-mill, horror-tinged thriller, but it's hard to shake the sense that Old Soul lacks, although hard to pin down, some dimension of depth.
