Ruins

Ruins by Amy Taylor follows a couple whose relationship is tested in unexpected ways against the sun-drenched backdrop of Athens, Greece. Emma is searching for meaning beyond work or motherhood, while Julian is grappling with the fallout of his stalled academic career. Things become complicated when they meet a young Greek woman named Lena.
Taylor excels at creating atmosphere. The novel is taut with emotional and psychological tension. Desire, power, and unspoken insecurities are subtly woven into the narrative. The writing is accessible yet literary, drawing readers into the characters’ morally complex world.
A clever element of the story is Emma’s reading of Medea. The play’s themes of betrayal, desire, and the consequences of morally fraught decisions echo the tensions in Emma, Julian, and Lena’s relationships. It highlights how passion and danger can coexist, and adds an extra layer of resonance to the unfolding drama.
The pace is slow to medium, particularly in the first half, as Taylor carefully establishes the characters’ motivations and backstories. I didn’t find the main characters particularly loveable, but their flaws felt realistic and thought-provoking. The story examines desire, intimacy, and human fallibility in a nuanced and insightful way.
The novel becomes more engaging once the stakes rise and the drama escalates. Emma’s introspection, Julian’s inner conflict, and Lena’s struggle with agency keep the narrative absorbing, even when morally ambiguous.
A “one year later” chapter offers reflection and closure, neatly tying together events and examining the ripple effects of choices.
Overall, Ruins was engaging, even if it wasn’t a perfect match for my personal tastes and suffered slightly from uneven pacing. I’d give it 3.5 out of 5 stars (rounded up to 4). Fans of literary fiction that examines flawed, morally complex characters, power dynamics, and emotional tension will find it satisfying.
