Seascraper is a quiet, salt-soaked novella about Tom Flett, a young shrimp fisher whose world briefly widens when an American filmmaker shows up on his stretch of coast.

Wood’s prose is steady and atmospheric, and he captures the rhythms of manual work and the tension between obligation and creative longing. One line that stood out to me was: “The sea has a way of reminding you what you are made of.”

I found the book heartfelt and well written, especially in its sense of place. It is a reflective story about class, hope, and the limits of small-town life. The emotional arc is gentle and sincere. Although, the characters and plot felt a little too subdued for me.

A good read, just not one I expect to last that long in my memory.
