Strange Pictures

Uketsu's Strange Pictures is a short, puzzle-like mystery built around eerie drawings and the unsettling stories behind them.

I'm not surprised this book has become so popular because the premise is genuinely fun and creative, and the creepy atmosphere works well. There are several moments that feel quietly unsettling and intriguing. It’s easy to read in a sitting, and the mystery element makes it very bingeable.

That said, I never found it particularly scary, and the story sometimes felt over-explained in a way that drained some of the mystery. The prose also felt fairly basic, which made the experience feel lighter than I expected from the premise.

Overall, I enjoyed my time with it, but it’s not one I’m rushing to recommend to everyone. A fun, creepy read that wasn't much of a standout for me.
