The Night Watchman

Louise Erdrich

★★★☆☆ Read November 29, 2025

I really tried with The Night Watchman and even pushed myself to finish it, hoping it would eventually click. But in the end, my main reaction was… indifference. I never quite connected with the characters, and the plot didn’t pull me in the way I expected. The writing, while clearly meaningful to many readers, just felt very average to me.

What makes this harder is that the subject matter is genuinely important. The fight against the termination Indigenous tribes is a powerful story, and one I wanted to be deeply moved by. I can see how this resonates for so many people, but for whatever reason, the emotional impact never fully landed for me.

I’m honestly a little surprised by how praised this book is, but reading is so personal. This one simply wasn’t for me, even though I appreciate the significance of the history it’s drawing from.
